This is a tribute…

to my electric-blue truck. Sold today! Many, many great memories have been generated in it, on it, with it and because of it. Like the first time we took it offroading to Muriwai Beach and got stuck in the soft sand, forgetting about the low-gear 4WD and burning the clutch… Or the time on Karioitahi Beach when we forgot to check the tides and only just made it back over the rocks… Or the memorable trip to Cape Reinga, thinking that driving 90km on the straight beach is surely faster than going along the winding road for more than 120km… Or playing cards inside because the blizzard conditions outside meant we weren’t allowed to drive down from Mt Ruapehu to Ohakune… Surfing, body boarding, snowboarding, camping, traveling, mountain biking, diving, getting married…

The big three-oh

Not mine! But Lukas turned the big three-oh yesterday. To celebrate, we invited Matt, Tom & Agata for dinner, who made sure that Lukas was ready to turn 30 by giving him a test. He had to prove he can cut a birthday cake (almost failed, as he served lots of pieces upside down!), sew a button, make cats & dogs love him and let plants survive in his care for at least a year (just look at our garden!).

He also had to change a baby’s nappy - since there were no babies immediately available, we improvised with a balloon, chocolate spread (eeew) and real nappies (which Tom brought). The first nappy went on with the straps criss-crossed and only after the “baby” was cleaned and the new nappy was being fitted, Lukas realised the right way to put the nappy on. Well done!

A big thing he failed was starting a car with jumper cables. He knows the theory and can connect the black cable - needs someone else to do the red cable for him, though. Scared of the sparks - that’s his Mum’s fault, an electric engineer, trying to protect her son from the dangers of electricity, managed to implant a pretty funny phobia instead. Lukas also will not change a light bulb until the light fitting is turned off at the switchboard. Along with half of the house.

My present was a lunch cruise with Pride of Auckland, you can see the photos and read about it here

Selling memories

Posted: Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 @ 12:14 pm in General, Wedding | No Comments »

OK, so maybe I’m dramatising a little bit. My wedding dress sold last week. A day after our half anniversary!!!

I got used to the idea that it would never sell. I kept relisting it on Trademe, thinking that I’ll keep doing it until it’s time for us to pack up and leave and once we come back from Canada it will then be too old to sell so I’ll get to keep it forever. Maybe it didn’t quite sound this way in my head but subconsciously this is what I expected would happen. I got annoyed each time it got in my way in the wardrobe (being much longer than my usual garments) but still didn’t want it to sell.

Now it’s ready to make another bride feel very beautiful and elegant on her wedding day. In Dargaville.

Rabbits and wild hogs

Currently the time is on fast-forward for us. Last Saturday was 6 months since our wedding. Half a year. Incredible. And what an excuse to go celebrate - winter style, with a bottle of red wine and a good dinner.

The restaurant of choice was Cazador in Dominion Rd - they serve game and Persian-style dishes. The restaurant was recommended by Eugene, my workmate, who seems to go there quite regularly. He stressed the importance of Vishnofka as an appetiser - so we obliged. It turned out to be (in alignment with our expectations) sour cherry liquor, served on ice. Not too sweet and very smooth. What followed was a meat eater feast - Aaron, stop reading now!

For the entree we decided to be adventurous and ordered pheasant livers and rabbit kidneys. Livers - we like. Kidneys - never had them before. I needed convincing but they turned out to be rather tasteless and with a mushroom-like texture. Edible. Served with tomato sauce and some spices, nicely rounded off dish. Couldn’t eat a mains-size of that but entree was manageable - especially one plate for two people.

We both had a slight problem with picking the main dish - too much choice. We were both set on having something from the game menu so that theoretically limited us to one page but there were dishes on other pages beckoning as well. My choice for next visit: chicken in walnuts and pomegranate sauce. There was also pigeon on the menu but as our neighbours breed homing pigeons and the birds spend most of their day on the neighbours’ roof where we can see them in all their white fluffy glory - no way I could eat pigeon. So instead I chose wild pig scotch fillets in mango sauce and Lukas had rabbit in Persian-style sauce with tomatoes and lots of spices. Yummy. We also ordered a side salad and some rice, which turned out to be good idea as the meat was just that: meat in sauce. Obligatory plate swap in the middle of the dinner and we were both impressed by both dishes. The sizes weren’t huge so we still had room for dessert - even after drinking a whole bottle of BYO red wine. Chocolate sounded like a good idea and we decided to share Tartufo - chocolate gelato with rich chocolate sauce center. Very good.

After finishing the dinner and paying the not-too-extravagant bill we rolled outside to wait for Greg, who offered to pick us up after dinner so we wouldn’t have to drive and could drink that wine responsibly. He also drove us to the restaurant - THANK YOU!

Two words of caution about the decor of Cazador: STUFFED ANIMALS. Everywhere. Ducks, pheasants, even DEER! Disconcerting, so I avoided looking around and instead concentrated on talking to my husband of 6 months. Happy half anniversary, baby!
