Maybe we just have to stop planning it…
Three weeks ago our trip down to the mountain ended in Otorohanga with Tom’s car deciding it had had enough and blowing a wheel bearing. Saturday was nice enough, we saw some kiwis and other interesting (altough not as histerically funny) birds in Otorohanga’s famous Kiwi House but Sunday’s forecast looked decidedly bad so we drove back to Auckland in the newly fixed car. (The mountain was closed that Sunday)
Two weeks ago the forecast looked even worse and we decided not to go. Saturday - visibility 25m and strong winds. Sunday - closed.
Last week again we waited until Friday to make the decision only to be greeted with a forecast that had two things to say: “wet and misty” and “gale force winds”. Didn’t go and the mountain was closed on both days.
This week I’m looking at the forecast and what do I see? Saturday: “Misty, with periods of rain. Snow above 1700 metres, and poor visibility. Northwesterlies rising to gale or severe gale“. Sunday: “Showers, some heavy, with snow lowering to 1300 metres. Winds changing to strong west to southwesterlies“.
Anyone see a pattern here???? And the worst (best) thing is there’s 2.2m of snow at Whakapapa and 2.6m (!!!!!) at Turoa. And further snow in the forecast.
