ATAAHUA ORA

We decided to seize the opportunity with both hands - we’re in Europe, in September and we have friends in Munich. Add all of that together and what do you get? Oktoberfest! But it wasn’t all debauchery and beer drinking, we also did some cultured sightseeing and managed to squeeze in a visit to a fantastic BMW museum. We also spent a couple of days sightseeing in Munich itself, which is a beautiful town. We were hosted by family Dziobek, who are old friends of my family. We got to meet their extended families and spend some time in Erding, a picturesque Bavarian town north of Munich. It was a fantastic long weekend and we will remember uncle Georg’s Bavarian breakfast for years to come: white Bavarian sausage, sweet mustard, pretzels and beer! What a welcome!

Jak wiadomo, staramy się nie przepuszczać okazji do podróżowania po Europie, więc kiedy zorientowaliśmy się, że we wrześniu mamy okazję pojechać do Monachium odwiedzić starych znajomych rodziny Agi nie zastanawialiśmy się długo. Przecież wrzesień plus Monachium równa się Oktoberfest! Ale nie spędziliśmy całego weekendu tylko na piciu piwa - dodaliśmy trochę kulturalnego zwiedzania, a nawet wizytę w świetnym muzeum BMW. Dwa dni połaziliśmy też po samym Monachium, które jest przepiękne i pełne historii. A gościła nas rodzina Dzióbków, dzięki którym mieliśmy okazję zobaczyć też kawałek Erdingu, bawarskiego miasteczka na północ od Monachium oraz poznać ich rozszerzone rodzinki. Było bardzo miło, dziękujemy! A wujkowe bawarskie śniadanie będziemy długo wspominać: biała bawarska kiełbasa, słodka musztarda, precle i piwo! Co za powitanie!

The heating season has begun. And the daylight savings ends this weekend. Only 5 months till spring!

Rozpoczęliśmy sezon grzewczy. A w sobotę kończy się czas letni. Tylko 5 miesięcy do wiosny!

Five days ago was the anniversary of our arrival in London. I can hardly believe it. So much has happened in the last year but it happened so fast that I actually have to stop and think about it to realise that it was only and already a year. We were lucky enough to find good jobs pretty quickly after coming to London - which was a blessing as our Canadian funds were disappearing very quickly and living in a ‘hostel’ was not a good thing and is not a good memory. Our first apartment in Shepherd’s Bush was great to begin with - spacious and in a great location but the traffic outside our windows made us realise we really are Kiwis deep down and need peace and quiet - and the possibility to open a window when it gets warm! Moving to Hammersmith was a turning point for us and we actually started to like living in London. I’m sure that the warmer weather and longer days also had something to do with the improved moods. Summer was great - lots of really hot, sunny days, barbecues in our river-view garden and lazy afternoons in parks. Now that autumn has arrived and the days are getting noticeably shorter we again remember what the winter is like in London - but this time we know what to expect. So hopefully it will be easier. Not long till Christmas!

Pięć dni temu minęła rocznica naszego przyjazdu do Londynu. Aż nie chce mi się wierzyć, że to już rok! Tyle się wydarzyło, ale w takim tempie, że dopiero po zatrzymaniu się i przemyśleniu okazuje się, że dało się to wszystko wcisnąć w dwanaście miesięcy. Na początku mieliśmy dużo szczęścia - udało się nam w miarę szybko znaleźć dobre prace, co było bardzo ważne, bo nasze kanadyjskie fundusze topniały w zastraszającym tempie, a mieszkanie w ‘hostelu’ nie należy do miłych wspomnień. Nasze pierwsze mieszkanko w Shepherd’s Bush na początku było wybawieniem, przestronne i w bardzo dobrej lokalizacji, ale im dłużej tam mieszkaliśmy tym bardziej przeszkadzał nam nieustanny szum samochodów zaraz pod naszym oknem. Okazało się, że w głębi ducha jesteśmy jednak kiwusami i otwarcie okna w ciepły dzień jest dla nas bardzo ważne! Po przeprowadzce do Hammersmith zaczęliśmy lubić mieszkanie w Londynie. Z pewnością ogromny wpływ na lepsze samopoczucie miała też cieplejsza pogoda i dłuższe dni. A lato było po prostu niesamowite - dużo gorących, słonecznych dni, grillowanie w naszym ogródku z widokiem na rzekę i leniwe popołudnia w parkach. Teraz znowu przyszła jesień, dni stały się zauważalnie krótsze i powoli przypominamy sobie co to znaczy zima w Londynie. Ale tym razem wiemy, czego się spodziewać, więc mamy nadzieję, że będzie łatwiej. W końcu niedługo już święta!

Last weekend of August saw us jetting off to Ireland. Our plan was to meet up with some old friends and finally meet some new ones. The old friend was Patryk, Lukas’ friend from South Africa, which he hasn’t seen nor communicated with in the last 12 years. But, thanks to the magic of Facebook, they got in touch this year and it turned out that Patryk moved to Ireland a few months ago. That’s basically next door! I’m happy to report that they got on like a house on fire and hopefully we’ll see some more of Patryk before either of us goes back home.

New friends were Marcin and Ilona, my Internet friends, with whom I corresponded for a few months. They seemed nice enough via email and even nicer on Skype and they invited us over, so we couldn’t say no! They turned out to be the greatest hosts and it was thanks to their hospitality and our long, long, long talks that continued well into the night that we really enjoyed our stay in Ireland, even though it rained two days out of three.

We did manage to get some sightseeing in - first day Cork, where we met with Patryk and wandered the streets in sunny weather while being constantly assured that it is very unusual and we shouldn’t be getting used to it. The next day we woke up to a wall of rain but still decided to venture out and visited Charles Fort and Old Head and Kinsale. It rained the whole day and it got pretty cold in the afternoon so Marcin started a fire in their fireplace and we spent a very cosy evening drinking wine and talking. On Monday the rain continued, so we had a lazy morning with Ilona (Marcin had to go to work) in Crosshaven and then finally got ourselves out the door and went to Blarney Castle, home of the famous Blarney Stone. The weather cleared again (gasp!) and we came back in full sunshine to say goodbye to our hosts and drive back to the airport. Check out the pictures, even the ones with mist and rain are very colourful. Ireland is a great place to live, it remainded us a lot of New Zealand. The only real difference was the weather - the temperatures in the middle of summer were like middle of winter in New Zealand. Pity.

W ostatni weekend sierpnia wybraliśmy się do Irlandii. Plan mieliśmy spotkać się ze starym znajomym Łukasza i w końcu osobiście poznać moich korespondencyjnych znajomych. Patryk, stary przyjaciel Łukasza, który niedawno przeprowadził się do Irlandii, a z którym Łukasz nie miał kontaktu od 12 lat, okazał się taki sam, jakim pamiętał go Łukasz (i vice versa, podobno!), więc od razu wskoczyli na tory starej znajomości. Mamy nadzieję jeszcze się spotkać z Patrykiem zanim ktoś z nas wróci do domu.

Marcin i Ilona, moi korespondencyjni znajomi, którzy wydawali się nam bardzo sympatyczni przez email i nawet bardziej sympatyczni przez Skype okazali się wspaniałymi gospodarzami i to głównie dzięki ich gościnności i naszym długim rozmowom uważamy ten wyjazd za naprawdę udany, mimo tego, że lało dwa dni z trzech.

Udało się nam trochę pozwiedzać, mimo (a może na przekór) deszczu. W pierwszy dzień poszlajaliśmy się po Cork z Patrykiem, gdzie pogoda nam dopisała. Patryk wciąż powtarzał, że to nie jest normalne i że nie mamy się przyzwyczajać. Następnego dnia obudziła nas ściana deszczu, ale i tak wybraliśmy się na Fort Karola i na Old Head oraz do Kinsale. Po południu zrobiło się zimno, więc wróciliśmy do Crosshaven, gdzie Marcin napalił w kominku i spędziliśmy przemiły wieczór gadając do późnej nocy. W poniedziałek dalej padało, więc niespiesznie zjedliśmy śniadanie z Iloną i w końcu wybraliśmy się na Zamek Blarney, gdzie pocałować można słynny Kamień Elokwencji. Tam pogoda się poprawiła i wróciliśmy w słońcu pożegnać się z naszymi gospodarzami i pojechać na lotnisko. Irlandia bardzo przypominała nam Nową Zelandię. Zielone pagórki, niewiele ludzi, piękne widoki. Tylko pogoda nie ta sama - temperatury w środku lata takie same jak w Nowej Zelandii w środku zimy. Szkoda.
